How does gender shape who you are, how you perceive others, and how the world understands you — or doesn’t?
As society wakes up to the exquisite variety of gender identity, you are invited to explore what that means. Transgender people are experiencing unprecedented momentum as well as dangerous backlash in their fight for safety, visibility, and acceptance, and it is more important than ever to show up as an informed and active ally to people of all genders.
Mother-and-son team Karen Hering and Catherine Charles Hammond weave together spiritual reflection, personal narrative, music, and practical information in order to open our hearts, minds, and actions to the beautiful diversity of gender as it is lived in the world today.
Catherine Charles Hammond is a Minneapolis-based writer, musician, and performer whose work exploring queer identity has been featured in 20% Theatre Company’s The Naked I, Fox Egg Gallery’s OUTspoken, and Intermedia Arts’ Queer Voices reading series. A leader of “Gender 101” workshops for congregations, staff trainings, consultation, and lectures at the Children’s Theatre Company, their album, whats a boy like you doin in a place like this, debuted in summer 2018.
Karen Hering is author of Writing to Wake the Soul: opening the sacred conversation within and consulting literary minister at Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul. She leads retreats and programs at Wisdom Ways and elsewhere. Her new book, Living in the Between: a Thresholder’s Guide to Personal and Global Change, will be released in late 2019
