Childhood Wound + Ego’s Descent
Scott introduces the journey of the Enneagram and our movement toward the life that we all desire as a Downward Ascent. This movement requires that we engage what we disown in order to find our freedom. This journey is found in all spiritual traditions and mythologies. Even nature itself follows this Downward Ascent, which we, for example, witness in the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.
Essential and Vast Self
Scott uses the image of the acorn to represent how each of us can move from trance to dance into our essential and vast self. Like the small hard-shelled acorn that has contained within it a massive, incredible oak tree, we have this ego that encases a magnificent self. Our journey into the Enneagram will require us to let go of who we have been, break out of the shell that the ego has tried so hard to create, and explore a whole new way of being in the world.
You are invited to reflect on the following questions:
- When do you know you are under the control of your ego?
- How do you know when your essential self is present?
