Let the Stones Shout Out!
Friday, February 24, 1-8pm and
Saturday, February 25, 9am-4:30pm
Do you ever find yourself picking up stones? Stones will call you.
Rock and stone are mentioned in many sacred texts and have played roles in religious traditions for millennia. Join us as we experience hands-on stone carving and explore spiritual traditions from world religions in which stone is an essential element. How do these traditions ground us in memory, home, and worship? During times of struggle? The class is named from the Christian story in which the Pharisees tell Jesus’ disciples to be silent, and Jesus replies, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry aloud!”
We will open ourselves to this most ancient element with prayer, learning, meditation and reflection. What is it that grounds us? Why is someone we consider trustworthy described as a “rock”? Why are we drawn to stone ruins?
Participants will go home with an animal figure they have carved in class. Carving tools and stones will be provided along with instruction. No experience necessary, just a willingness to get dusty and have fun. And, some stones can be pre-shaped and you would do the refinining.
On February 24 and 25, we had a wonderful group of people carving stones at our proram "Let the Stones Shout Out." What an amazing experience of dust, tools, sandpaper, stones ... and Spirit moving among the stone carvers. Take a look at the pictures.
