A Mingling of Worlds A Celebration of All Hallow's Eve, Halloween, All Saints Day, and the Days of the Dead
Many cultures around the world consider October 31 and November 1, and the days surrounding, as a “thin place” in time when the veil between the living and the dead is lifted. Rooted in the Celtic festival of Samhain, meaning “summer’s end,” All Saints Day marks the Catholic festival honoring exceptional persons of faith. In Mexico, many celebrate The Days of the Dead, when dearly departed family members return – briefly – to feasts and displays laid out in cemetery ofrendas. Jewish tradition has its own version of this as well, recorded in the Kabbalah’s mystical writings as a “wedding celebration” signifying the union between the human and the Divine. In this afternoon of art, music and ritual led by the poetic teachers Sam King and Julie Neraas, we’ll touch the mingling of worlds and open to the Divine made available to us in a particular way at this time of year.
PRESENTERS: Susan Deborah (Sam) King is a poet, teacher, and leader of groups on creativity and spirituality. She has written four volumes of poetry. She lives in Minneapolis and on an island off the coast of Maine. Julie Neraas is a spiritual director and retreat leader and associate professor of graduate studies at Hamline University, where she has taught since 1991. She is an ordained Presbyterian minister who serves on the Wisdom Ways Advisory Committee.
